A Marshall Liberal Government will implement a Local Government Rate Capping scheme to prevent ratepayers having to cop excessive increases in council rates year on year.
We will also restrict increases for other local government fees and charges to further reduce rising cost of living pressures on South Australian households and businesses.
With council rates one of the biggest taxes property owners pay, this will save households and businesses money, increase business confidence, and help to attract investment to our state.
In recent years, council rates have increased well above inflation, with council rates rising by three times CPI in some council areas. In contrast, NSW has had rate capping since 1977 and has the lowest council rates in the nation.
That’s why a Marshall Liberal Government is committed to lowering costs for families and businesses by delivering this reform.
