No more taxpayer-funded political ads

We'll be supporting business through better government

What we’ll do

A Marshall Liberal Government will stop the blatant misuse and waste of taxpayer funds for political purposes by imposing stricter controls on taxpayer-funded advertising.

We will release government advertising costs monthly and allow the Electoral Commissioner to investigate advertising. If it is found that there has been a misuse of funds, the spending will have to come out of election campaign funding or be paid back.

Why we’re doing it

The Weatherill Government has repeatedly misused taxpayers’ money to pay for blatantly political advertising – money that should have been used to cut costs for households and businesses and improve government services.

Recent government advertising has cost taxpayers more than $9 million – including extensive television, radio and newspaper advertising of the government’s energy plan at a cost of $2.6 million.

This simply doesn’t pass the pub test and that’s why we will introduce legislation to strictly control government advertising.
