Paying bills on time

We'll be supporting business through better government

What we’ll do

A Marshall Liberal Government will ensure businesses do not experience cash flow problems because of poor government administration by ensuring government bills are paid on time.

Instead of needing to go through the cumbersome and bureaucratic process of claiming interest on overdue bills, we will ensure interest is automatically paid to businesses on any invoice unduly paid late.

We will also require each Minister to report publicly on monthly payment performance to ensure each department is accountable to taxpayers for not wasting their money on overdue bills.

Why we’re doing it

Businesses continually complain about the late payment of bills by South Australian Government Departments.

Prompt payment is vital for small and medium-sized businesses, although there is no excuse for government departments not to pay all invoices on time.

The national Small Business Ombudsman recently disclosed that the Weatherill Government had $470 million in outstanding payments, many of which were more than 60 days overdue.

The cashflow problems this causes are significant. Often, it means small businesses must delay wages to their own staff and payments to their suppliers.

This is simply not good enough and that’s why we will ensure government bills are paid on time.
