Redeveloping Chinatown

Ensuring Adelaide remains a great place to live and work

What we’ll do

A Marshall Liberal Government will invest in a major re-development of Chinatown by providing financial support for a permanent cover for Moonta Street.

It’s important that we continue to recognise the Chinese community’s significant contribution to South Australia and support for re-developing Chinatown does just that.

Why we’re doing it

Adelaide’s Chinatown plaza is being redeveloped and the adjacent Adelaide Central Market is slotted for a major upgrade after it returns to the control of the Adelaide City Council in 2018.

The plans for Chinatown and the upgrade of the Central Market offer a great opportunity to cement South Australia’s tourism, trade and cultural ties with China.

The Chinatown precinct represents a little slice of home for our thousands of Chinese tourists and students and ensuring the area is an even greater visitor experience will boost tourism and make them feel even more welcome.

That’s why we will invest in protecting this vibrant tourism and shopping precinct from the weather.
