A Marshall Liberal Government will ensure people in the Riverland have access to legal advice and support by re-instating a full-time, on the ground community legal service.
It will be located centrally in the Riverland and will also provide services to the Mallee and Mid Murray.
After providing free legal advice and expertise for almost 20 years, the Riverland Community Legal Service was forced by the Weatherill Government to close its doors in June 2017.
In its place, the Southern Community Justice Centre has been tasked with providing community legal services to the Riverland and Mallee with significantly less funding and from an office based at Christies Beach, more than three hours’ drive from the Riverland.
Prior to the closure of the Riverland Community Legal Service, the Legal Services Commission had classified the Riverland in the category of ‘most disadvantage’, with many of the people using these services needing in-person assistance for their complex cases.
Vulnerable people should be able to access legal services in person, regardless of where they live.
That’s why we will restore legal services in the Riverland.
